Afro art under new direction

The boutique Afro art has existed in Stockholm since 1967. During these years Afro art has provided a watering-hole for all those who have a passionate interest in ethnic craft. During this whole time the philosophy has been to support local craftsmen in developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin-America. The goal has been to ensure that the majority of the profit will be returned to the producers rather than disappearing to middle men along the distribution chain.

Maja Ekmark, Marie Persson och Katarina Chintoh är 3 av delägarna i Afroart. (De övriga delägarna är Gunilla Lundberg, Emma Niklasson och Bodil Karlsson.)

Butiken Afroart ligger på Hornsgatan 58 i Stockholm.

During the spring of 2003 we, six freelance textile designers and also former class mates at Konstfackskolan, were given the opportunity to take over the boutique and Afro art's business idea. We are very happy and proud to have been able at full scale to develop that work which we already initiated in 2000 with the acknowledged textile collection Miramaya. This is a collaboration with Afro art that also included SIDA and above all, ten textile co-operatives in Guatemala.

The ambition is to continue our work in the Afro art's fair trade spirit. We will also in the future import and distribute craft products from the developing countries. Our goal is to modernise Afro art's concept. Similar to the Miramaya project we intend to seek partnerships with crafts people in the Third World and actively work as designers to develop already existing as well as new products.
